Bernstein Conducts Stravinsky, an Album Review

If there were a pax orchestra, it would be during the 1950s. The prosperity of post-World War II America gave greater access to the arts for a newly affluent middle class. Our relatively conservative nation still appreciated classical music. The largely wealthy audience positioned modern orchestras for unprecedented growth. The rising affluence of the 1950s provided a significant income stream from gross ticket sales. Affluence, when coupled with a stable economy, allowed orchestras to offer …

The European Tour

This past summer challenged me as a traveler, musician, and individual. What a better way to transition to college than touring Europe with an Orchestra! Instead of pedantically recapping each moment, I share my personal journal with you of my travels. “We played Carmena Burana, American in Paris, and Overture to the Magic flute at the Mozartrum, the perennial music hall in Western Europe, think of it as the Carnegie hall of the east, a picture of our rehearsal is attached. I appreciate many diverse types of music (classic rock, pop, jazz, classical music, bop, swing, blues, funk, world music, traditional Indian Ragas), however when reviewing my musical library of CDs (and iTunes store music purchases) there …

Playing the Electric Upright Bass in a Rock Orchestral Setting:

After having finished playing Eclectic Electric’s most recent concert, I wanted to take this time to comment on the joys, challenges, and uniqueness of playing the Electric Upright Bass, (EUB) in a rock- orchestral setting. After having played bass guitar it the group last year, when asked to play EUB, I felt honored, proud, and most importantly, challenged. When I found out that I would be playing the “Clevienger” Upright Electric, I was enthusiastic about learning all I could about …
